Whistling Vivaldi How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do [Book Review]

In this episode I’m reviewing a book that has a special place in my heart. It’s a book that I have given as a gift to SO many people! The book is called Whistling Vivaldi: How Stereotypes Affect Us and What We Can Do. It’s a book that addresses stereotypes in a way that is still not widely understood.

In todays show I discuss several things including:

  • Stereotype threat what it means and why you should care
  • How literally Whistling the music of Vivaldi changed the day to day experiences of one man
  • The reason why we all Whistle Vivaldi from time to time and much much more

Here’s some of what I share in the show:

My Excitement about Whistling Vivaldi:

I explain why I am so excited about reviewing this book and the impact it has had on people I know:

“There’s a short list of books that I regularly recommend to people or give as gifts to people I know or to those I’m meeting for the first time. I’ve given this book to so many people that I have met in my life and it’s probably the one that I’ve seen have the biggest impact on those I’ve given it to.”

The Importance of Whistling Vivaldi:

I discuss several reasons why this book is so important and how it challenges the way we think:

“This book is important because it takes a phenomenon that we think we know understand: stereotypes and it really explains the complexity in a simple and easy to access way, using examples that we can all relate to.”

How we all “Whistle Vivaldi”

I explain how not only is Whistling Vivaldi an important concept in the contemporary workplace, but we all have the potential to Whistle Vivaldi:

“Understanding the influence of stereotypes was essential and is still a core part of the work I do now. Especially because we all “whistle Vivaldi” in one-way or another”
